Do you know your target audience?

We’ve all heard the phrase, “Know your audience.” Maybe in a high school or college speech class, but did we ask ourselves how that applies to our own businesses? Maybe you fell asleep in your business class when your professor went over this topic. Either way, we are here to help you understand why it’s so important to discover your company’s target audience and market to them!

Why it matters

Let’s start by saying that it is nearly impossible to market to everyone because you can only afford to stretch your company in so many directions. This doesn’t mean you have to exclude certain people or groups from your sales, it just means that by identifying a target audience, you are focusing the majority of your efforts marketing to a specific subset of people.

For example, the first thing that comes to mind when I think of knowing your target audience and marketing to them is popular kid’s YouTube channels. One of the most popular channels is called Ryan’s World with a whopping 30.8 million subscribers! How is this channel so successful you might ask? It’s because the creators know their target audience: Kids! If you are a parent and your child is obsessed with these channels, you most likely want to throw your phone out of the window by now.

The reason kids are so obsessed is because these creators know what they are doing and who they are wanting to reach. They know their target audience, which allows them to focus all of their efforts on creating every video with kids entertainment in mind. This doesn’t mean that they don’t allow or want parents and adults to watch the videos, it just means that their main goal is to reach children.

How to know

The easiest way to determine your target audience is to ask yourself, “What makes my company unique?” and, “What type of person benefits the most from our products or services?” After you ask those questions, check out your social media analytics to see the different demographics that are interacting with your content. This will help you figure out who to focus on.

Bang for your buck

Determining your company’s target audience also helps increase your sales because that audience’s needs are met with your company. This strategy is especially useful to small companies because large companies don’t always market to a specific audience. By identifying your company’s target audience you will be able to more effectively use your advertising funds to market towards those who are most likely to become your customers. Your efforts will make your customers feel seen and heard, and they are more likely to shop with you again!
